About The Chatwal Hotel

The Chatwal salutes the New York City "baby grand" hotels of a bygone era, with unparalleled accommodations and a fresh perspective. Set on the "Great White Way" of the theatre district, this landmark Stanford White-designed building was home to the famous Lambs Club -- a Who's Who of American theatre. Beautifully restored and modernized by master architect and designer Thierry Despont, The Chatwal's 76 guest rooms have custom-designed luxuries while meticulously recreating 1930's Deco design, evoking a strong sense of place and era. To learn more about The Chatwal, enjoy our interesting collection of facts below.

  • The Chatwal opened in September 2010 on West 44th Street in New York's theatre district.
  • The opening marked the launch of Sant Chatwal's new luxury hotel brand, The Chatwal  - with plans in the works for additional luxury properties in the UK and India.
  • The location was originally home to the famous Lambs Club. America's first professional theatre club, it was named after the 19th-century London club inspired by the famous literary and theatrical salon presided over by essayist Charles Lamb and his sister Mary. "When I was made a Lamb, I felt I had been knighted," saidFred Astaire.
  • The Chatwal is a landmark building designed by the famous architect Stanford White, who was also responsible for the Villard House on Madison Avenue and the original Madison Square Garden.
  • The past meets the future: Everything about The Chatwal evokes the glamour of early 20th-century travel and New York Empire Art Deco.
  • The Chatwal is first New York hotel to be designed from top-to-bottom by master architect and star designerThierry Despont -- known for his work on the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty, the design of galleries at the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, and the restoration of the Foyer and the restaurant at Claridge's.
  • Original features have been brilliantly incorporated into the new design, creating a strong sense of place and era: from the striking floor-to-ceiling fireplace reinstated in the restaurant and the restoration of the façade, to the use of chrome metal details, fine suede walls, and leather detailing inspired by the craftsmanship of 18th-century malletier travel trunk designers.
  • Celebrated Chef Geoffrey Zakarian (Town, Country and The Water Club at Borgata) is the creative force behind the glamorous 80-seat restaurant, The Lambs Club, which features built-in red leather banquettes and bright chrome fittings. Chef Zakarian has paid homage to the classic bar and grill with a menu serving his signature modern American cuisine.
  • In addition to the restaurant, Chef Zakarian along with his partners Margaret Zakarian, David Rabin, Will Regan and Jeffrey Jah (the team behind the wildly successful lounges Double Seven and Lotus) will operate The Bar at The Lambs Club, a stunning lounge that overlooks the grand Entrance Hall. Dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows allow for a bird's-eye view of 44th Street, perfect for people-watching or all day dining in the light-filled space. At night, guests may enjoy Prohibition-style cocktails in the comfort of oversized banquettes or at chrome bar custom designed by Thierry Despont.
  • The stars of yesterday's Lambs Club have been replaced by some of today's star brands: Asprey bathroom amenities, Frette bed linens and towels, and luscious Kashwére bathrobes. Krigler, the French perfume maker, has created 'The Chatwal No. 44'. Krigler perfumes were favorites of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Scott Fitzgerald, John F. Kennedy, and Marlene Dietrich.
  • The Chatwal is the first member of Starwood's prestigious Luxury Collection in Manhattan's theatre district.
  • The Chatwal is the first member of the acclaimed Virtuoso Preview  program.

Witness a legendary address transformed. As the onetime haunt of Hollywood icons, The Chatwal captivates guests with an alluring blend of Art Deco glamour and contemporary luxury.
